What is Veganism?

"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."

Hello I'm Tina (and this is Milo!)

I've always felt a deep connection with animals and despite eating meat in early childhood, the morality of eating animals became my motivation to initially switch to a vegetarian diet at a young age.

I grew up with companion animals at home and my love of horses meant that my time was spent at a local riding school. As well as keeping horses and ponies, they kept pigs and turkeys for meat. One Christmas time, aged 9, I witnessed the turkeys being dragged through the yard to be butchered. Seeing their fate first hand was shocking and needless to say I never ate turkey again. Later, aged 11, I met a fellow volunteer at an event who was vegetarian which I found inspirational, I came home and immediately announced to my mum that I was now vegetarian! She found it amusing, as I didn't even like vegetables at the time, but my mind was made up, I cared too much about animals and I've never looked back.

I've spent the past 20+ years studying and working in natural health, nutrition, homeopathy and the environment. The more I learnt about natural health, the more I discovered how much healthier a plant based diet can be on your overall wellbeing as well as; reduced rates of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and many cancers. 65% of the global population also have a lactose intolerance which is often left  un-diagnosed.

The benefits a vegan lifestyle can have on wildlife is huge, animal agriculture creates major problems to the environment and our ecosystems, all issues that are very close to my heart.

Veganism was a gradual transition for me so making the decision to go fully vegan in 2017 felt like such a relief, it was the best decision I ever made! Finally I felt like I was living my values completely. Although I no longer ride horses or support this for ethical reasons, I still have a huge connection with animals and their wellbeing, and support vegan run animal charities wherever I can.

Animal free eating has become so much easier with all the amazing plant based products available in stores and online. As a self confessed foodie, whether you want to eat delicious healthy food or prefer the occasional junk food, there's a plant based alternative for everything!

Whether you're looking for a gradual diet transition or ready for a complete switch to veganism, I'm here to support you along the way. You'll feel motivated and empowered to take the first step and keep on going :)

TOP 4 VEGAN MYTHS

Myth #1

Vegan diets make you weak and low in energy

False :) The idea that vegans are all sickly and weak is thankfully rapidly fading. Many top athletes have praised the health and performance benefits of a plant based diet:

Tennis player - Venus Williams

Formula One driver - Sir Lewis Hamilton

Vegan strongman - Patrik Baboumian

Boxer - David Haye

Olympic Cycling Champion - Victoria Pendleton

Tennis player - Novak Djokovic

Myth #2

Vegans don't get enough protein

False :) Research consistently shows protein intake among vegans is not only more than sufficient but also healthier. In meat-eaters, however, protein levels are often much higher than the recommended levels, potentially increasing the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis. Studies show that switching to a plant based diet can significantly reduce your risk of disease.

Eating a wholefoods plant based diet will provide you with plenty of the necessary protein.

Myth #3

Vegan diets are bland and boring

False :) Eating a healthy, wholefoods vegan diet gives you the most varied and exciting diet available. The only foods you leave out are animal products which means you're free to eat everything else! All the amazing fresh fruits and vegetables as well as treats and junk food options if that's what you fancy. The exciting range of plant based foods available now means there really is something for everybody's taste.

Myth #4

Vegan diets aren't healthy

True and false :)  Like with anything, you can be an unhealthy vegan if you eat processed foods, cakes and biscuits all day but a well balanced vegan diet is healthy. Eating a vegan diet means you're leaving out animal products which contribute to a range of chronic health problems including cancer, heart disease and diabetes. By eating a healthy wholefoods vegan diet, you are feeding your body with the best natural medicine.
